“It was one of the most inspiring diverse improv sessions I‘ve ever experienced. Lots of new personal realisations. Snailprov was born.“
Scene City is a novel form of improv-powered urban exploration, with players taking a haphazard route round a city playing scenes inspired by what they see and feel as they go.
It is a form of psychogeography, which has its roots in left-wing artistic ideas from 50s and 60s France. But, put simply, it is about using our imaginations and autonomy to enhance city life.
Players might, for example, re-imagine a parking meter as a droid, a view over the 4th district as the ruins of ancient Troy or an apartment block as the little known birthplace of Viennese karate.
The prettiest bits of a city are rarely the most inspiring. So we tend to go off the beaten path to find more compelling stories inspired by underpasses, skips, air-conditioning units and abandoned bicycles. ■
The next one is on Sunday August 4th.
